MannaKehila sprung out of a family idea. Originally intended as an app that could be shared by immediate and extended family to share recipes, the thought rapidly became – this could help churches!
Food and community have always been woven into Christian life and our idea of a shared “living cookbook” community app fits perfectly, updating and yet moving beyond the old, traditional church cookbook. Could we make it more than that?
At the same time, we saw an opportunity for MannaKehila to give something tangible back. Rather than charging churches to use the platform, we designed it so that participating churches and communities receive recurring financial support as their members use MannaKehila. We imagined the potential of what good the app could bring, through its ripple effect out into the world.
For us, those two ideas belong together: building community and helping support the community being built.
That is also where the name comes from. Manna recalls God’s provision, while Kehila means community or congregation. Together, they express what we hope MannaKehila can become — a small way of helping nourish Christian communities, both around the table and beyond it.
